The region called Caprivi Strip is an ultra-narrow strip that separates Botswana and Angola as it runs 450km west to east from the main part of Namibia to the Zambezi River on the eastern border.

A popular itinerary with our guests is to start in Windhoek, explore Namibia, then travel along the Caprivi Strip to head into Botswana. If this appeals, we recommend you set aside at least 3 weeks for this itinerary to make the most of this wonderful adventure.

After exploring and falling in love with the dry, arid expanse of Namibia, you will be astonished by the Caprivi Strip – an unexpected lush oasis, with waterlogged swamps and rivers flanked by gently swaying palm fronds.

Several large national parks have been opened on the banks of the Zambezi river, where you can experience both 4x4 land-based game drives as well as Botswana’s trademark water-based boat and mokoro safaris. You will be amazed by the huge herds of elephant roaming absolutely freely and you will finally get to round up your photo collection with some great shots of hippos and crocodiles. Since the Caprivi strip has an entirely different eco-system, you will encounter many more different species than elsewhere in Namibia.

Adrenaline lovers will also have the option to do some wild water rafting at Popa Falls (in a crocodile free area), quad-biking, fat-biking etc, there is no lack of activities …

Best time to go to Caprivi Str

The Caprivi Strip is a bit different to the rest of Namibia due to having so many rivers. The weather is more temperate as it is not a desert climate, and it remains lush and green all year round.

Winter (June to September):  Our favourite time to visit the Caprivi Strip is during winter. The nights do get cold, but you can enjoy sunny warm days with day temperatures averaging around 28°C / 83°F. Rain is rare, but occasional. The seasons influence game viewing less than in other regions though, as the river never dries out, so access to water is guaranteed all year long. Since the surrounding region is at its driest, many animals flock to the Caprivi’s abundance of water, making this our best time for wildlife viewing.

Spring (September-November) and Autumn (April – May):  The in-between seasons are a very pleasant time to visit the Caprivi Strip, and autumn (April, May) is particularly beautiful with lush vegetation and moderate temperatures that is more bearable than summer and less chilly than winter. Particularly the evenings and nights are warmer compared to winter, and daytime temperatures climb to about 30°C / 85°F;

Summer(December to March) Like the rest of Namibia, summer is the rainy season in the Caprivi Strip. However, unlike the rest of this desert country, the Caprivi receives a lot of rain – making for sub-optimal game viewing, lots of mosquitos and regional flooding which makes many areas inaccessible. With that in mind summer is not our favourite time to go to the Caprivi Strip.  On the upside, the summer heat is more temperate and bearable compared to the desert regions, and rarely goes beyond 35°C/ 95°F. Summer is also a great time for bird-watching and the Caprivi region is an ornithologist delight.
