If it is an authentic off-the-beaten-track African adventure you are after, look no further than the Wild Coast. Essentially a continuation of the Garden Route, the Wild Coast stretches between Port Elizabeth and Durban. But, while the Garden Route may be considered “Africa Lite” with an amazing tourist infrastructure in place, the Wild Coast lives up to its name with a far more adventurous offering.

Expect beautiful golden beaches without a person in sight, dramatic cliffs that plunge into the surf below, and picture-perfect Xhosa villages with traditional thatch roofed “rondavels” dotting the landscape. This is the real Africa. One of the most quintessential Wild Coast sights spotting some Nguni cattle on a remote beach. Possibly the most beautiful cattle in the world with their patterned hides, the cattle head down to the beaches regularly to lick salt from the rocks – truly Instagram-worthy.

Roads are few and not the best maintained in the Wild Coast. Major detours often add to the adventure, making the area best explored without a strict timeline to stick to. But if you have an adventurous spirit, the Wild Coast is a great place to disconnect from structured, sophisticated, concrete living.
While you take in all these sights, be sure to drop in at the museum commemorating the birthplace of Nelson Mandela, and make sure you don’t miss the famous Hole in the Wall. This stunning geological formation in the sea is close to the charming and utterly laid-back village of Coffee Bay.

Other highlights of the Wild Coast included spectacular coastal hike along the rolling green hills, swimming in the lagoon beneath stunning waterfalls, and spotting whales and dolphins just off the coast. Don’t forget to sample the stunning and ridiculously cheap fresh seafood on offer. Oysters are so cheap during oyster season for example, that even the most basic backpackers offer them for free as a snack.

Best time to go to The Wild Coast

The Wild Coast is actually a great all year round destination with mild winters and warm tropical summers.

Summer (November - March): If you like heat and summer, you should chose the summer months from October to March to visit the Wild Coast. The weather is sub tropically warm and pleasant, however this is also the rainy season and you might get a few showers now and then along with a spectacular thunder and lightning show. Maximum temperatures average around 30°C / 90°F with high humidity that makes it feel hotter.

Winter(June – August): If you can’t deal with subtropical humidity, then we recommend to go to the Wild Coast during winter from May to September, when the weather is mild and dry with maximum temperatures around 20°C / 68°F. July also coincides with the Sardine Run (the largest marine migration on the planet and a must-see if you’re at all interested in diving or marine wildlife in general), leading to lots of whale and dolphin activity. Winter is also when the aloes and corral trees are in full bloom along the Wild Coast. It is a pretty exciting time!
