Rugged, windswept and bewitchingly beautiful with its quaint whitewashed fishermen houses and deserted beaches, welcome to South Africa’s West Coast. Stretching from Cape Town towards Namibia, the West Coast is still very untouched and far less of a tourist destination than the Garden Route. Yet is has so much to offer!

Although the area is generally free from crowds, and you are often the only person on the beach, this all changes in August and September when spring arrives and the region is covered in a bright beautiful carpet of wild flowers. Visitors from all over the world flock to this otherwise semi-arid region to witness the natural splendour that spring brings, leading to congested highways and chockablock accommodation – but it is oh so worth it.

The West Coast is also home to fertile vineyards, quaint inland towns, fossil parks, and some of the country’s best craft beer. And let’s not forget – this is the seat of South Africa’s crayfish industry and boasts some of the best seafood in South Africa.

In fact, local eatery Wolfgat, inviting and unassuming, was crowned Best Restaurant in the World in 2019! The West Coast is also South Africa’s kitesurfing mecca. With its crystal blue lagoon that stretches along the coast of Langebaan, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve been transported to the shores of a Greek island.

Best time to go to The West Coast

Autumn (March – June):  At The Tracel Cafe our favourite time to visit the West Coast are the shoulder-season months of March, April and May. These months are far less windy than the summer months and temperatures more temperature around 25°C / 77°F, making for gorgeous days spent relaxing on the beach.

Summer(October - March): If you are after a true sand, sea and sun beach holiday, then the best time to go to the West Coast and Paternoster are the summer months of December through to February. The West Coast climate is typically Mediterranean, with daytime temperatures reaching a maximum of 35°C / 95°F. The summer months are dry with very little rainfall but often get very windy, making beach days less appealing.

Winter(June - August): The least popular time to visit the West Coast are the wet colder months of June, July and August. The West Coast  does get some beautiful bright sunny days in between the showers, when it is lovely to take a light jacket and go for a long stroll on a beach you may well have all to yourself.  The temperature along the coast is quite chilly but hardly ever drops below 7°C / 45°F.

Spring(August – October):  If you are a flower enthusiast or simply love a stunning view, springtime is the best time to go to the West Coast and Paternoster. The flower season depends totally on when the rains arrive, but usually peaks between mid-August and mid-September. This colourful spectacle will leave you breathless, as the usually dry landscape is transformed into an explosion of colour.
