If you are looking for a road trip destination during the winter months, look no further than the province of KwaZulu Natal and in particular the coastal reserve of iSimangaliso and the nature reserve of Hluhluwe. While Cape Town and much of the Western Cape is dreary, grey and wet – the North Coast enjoys beautiful blue-sky sunny days and pleasantly mild temperatures.

KwaZulu Natal is a vast province that includes colourful and exotic Durban, South Africa’s third biggest city, the mighty Drakensberg range, but it is the gorgeous sub-tropical coastline that stretches for nearly 600km and ends at the Mozambique border that draws the majority of visitors. The jewel in the KwaZulu Natal North Coast is undeniably iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 due to its rich biodiversity, unique ecosystems and natural beauty, this is a must-visit in the region. In addition to beautifully unspoilt golden beaches, warm Indian Ocean surf, an abundance of wildlife (especially birds!), this is one of the few places in the world where you might see a hippo take a stroll on the beach, or sometimes even down the main street of the local village.
Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Isimangaliso is the renowned wildlife sanctuaries of Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve. Not only is this the oldest reserve in South Africa, you can also one might rightly say, home of the rhino! When poaching was at its worst, in the 1920s, only about 25 white rhinos were left alive, all in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi. Luckily, through herculean conservation efforts, they have managed to increase the numbers dramatically. In fact, all rhinos that you can admire today in other game reserves across South Africa and beyond were reintroduced there from KwaZulu Natal.

Between the majestic mountains, the traditional Zulu homesteads, vast expanse of sweet smelling sugar cane plantations, abundance of bananas and pineapples, incredible safaris and the stunning beaches of the Indian Ocean with its warm water, this is a truly is an all-rounder destination!
