The famous Garden Route is a stretch of 800km which follows the coast between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. It gets its name from the incredible biodiversity and constantly changing ecosystems along its route.

A trip along the Garden Route is a stunning introduction to some of the best South Africa has to offer and a perfect option for families – with lots of kid-friendly activities and no malaria to worry about

A great option is to take a route via the wide-open spaces of the Little Karoo semi-desert, before reaching never-ending unspoilt beaches along the coast. Once you’ve arrived, you can explore the mysterious Knysna Forest, still home to some free-roaming elephants, and of course you’ll have to take the obligatory selfie at the famous suspended bridges of Tsitsikamma National Park.

To finish with a bang, you can round off your beach holiday with an authentic Big 5 safari in one of the private game reserves or government-owned Addo Elephant Park, which are conveniently close and malaria-free.

From relaxing champagnes cruises, adventurous kayaking and whale watching to forest canopy tours and bungee-jumping from the highest bridge jump in the world –the Garden Route caters for everyone.
Garden Route: A haven for golfers

Finally let’s not forget that some of the best golf courses in the world are right here, waiting for you. Before Ernie “Big Easy” Els, South Africa’s most famous golfer was Gary Player, who can be counted amongst the greatest players in the world.

He became a golf course designer in later years and the Links Court at Fancourt, voted the best Golf Course in SA by Golf Digest 2018, is probably his greatest creation.

Other famous and acclaimed courses include Pinnacle Point, offering dramatic views (and winner of the Best Course in South Africa for 2016 and 2017) or Simola and Pezula, both of them also considered amongst the top 10 courses in South Africa.

Best time to go to South Africa

Autumn (April- May) and Spring (September - October: At The Travel Cafe, our best time to visit the Garden Route is spring or autumn. Temperatures are around 15 and 25°C / 60°F and 80°F. The weather is usually dry (with only moderate chances of rain) and the Fynbos wildflowers are blooming. If you travel in October, there is a good chance you can spot majestic southern right whales basking off the coast of Hermanus and beyond (the whale season runs July – October).

Summer(November - March): The summer months from November to March are generally dry and hot with daytime temperatures of 25°C to 35°C / 75°F to 95°F and plenty of sunshine (10.5hrs a day on average). The Christmas Holidays may offer the best weather but this is also when the tourism season reaches its peak leading to crowded beaches and inflated prices, though ideal to go to the Garden Route if you are primarily after a sun-filled seaside holiday.

Winter(June – September):  The winter months are the least favourable time of year to visit the Garden Route from the perspective of the wet and rainy weather conditions. Although you do get sunny days, the winter months is when the Garden Route receives the majority of its rainfall. For beachside holidays during this time, we recommend you rather head to Kwa Zulu Natal where the winter months are gorgeous, dry and pleasant.
