Different Ways We Give Back

Many companies talk about "social responsibility" and that time they painted the wall of a local school. Perhaps they even built a school. Such actions are nice, but do they lead to lasting change? We don't believe they do. Because who will run the new school when the patron leaves? Has the local community learned how to build other schools, or even how to successfully operate and manage a school? Does painting a school wall have a truly positive impact on the community?

At The Travel Cafe Cape Town we have decided not to follow the pattern of handouts, which only strip people of their power. Instead we believe the ultimate way to contribute is by empowering people, and to help them take charge of their own life and their destiny.

That is why we are so proud of the amazing projects on this page which we have been able to work with since we started The Travel Cafe Cape Town. And watch this space, we'll add more projects - as we grow our company so we will also be able to expand our impact.

Isibane se Afrika | The light from Africa.

The first time we heard Isibane se Afrika perform in the Waterfront, we immediately knew there was something magical about this traditional African choir. Their voices, rhythm, passion and energy was unlike anything we'd ever seen before and really touched our hearts. Since that day some 1.5 years ago, we have helped the choir get a website, design a logo, start a non-profit organisation and secure a building which we will turn into a cultural hub for Khayelitsha.

eKhaya eKasi | Empowering Women Through Crafts

We love African beadwork, and when this beautiful art form helps local ladies to earn a stable income so they can buy clothes for their kids and put food on the table, then even better. eKhaya eKasi is a heart-warming organisation that does exactly that. The ladies at eKhaya eKasi use beads to create beautiful gifts for our guests. We are also very proud that we were able to help them secure their largest order ever for 3,500 bracelets that were shipped to Europe, which provided some crucially needed funds.

SANCCOB
 | Sea Bird Sanctuary

Did you know African penguins – those cute waddling birds on Cape Town’s beaches – are actually more endangered than rhinos! Crazy, right? We humans have destroyed so much of their habitat that these iconic seabirds are having a really tough time surviving. To help out, The Travel Cafe Cape Town adopted a penguin to foot his medical bill after he cut his little leg. SANCCOB asked us how we want to name him, and we decided on Pacowyn – a play on words for François nickname “Paco” and the Afrikaans word for penguin, pikkewyn. Take good care of yourself little fella!

Uthando | Philanthropic Township Visits

Your trip to South Africa can serve a purpose far bigger than just being an unforgettable and amazingly beautiful holiday. Travel can truly bring about change. It was this concept that formed the cornerstone of Uthando. With a name that literally translates to “love” in Xhosa, Uthando’s philanthropic township tours are all about showcasing and supporting the 50+ charities they work with. Not only are these tours extremely informative, eye-opening and moving but more than half of the ticket price goes back to uplift and empower the charities visited.

Woodstock Cleanup Group | Creating A Cleaner, Greener Neighbourhood

As local “Woodies” we are very passionate about our colourful and multi-cultural neighbourhood. What we are less fond of is the amount of rubbish that winds up on our streets. Instead of just complaining or waiting for the city council to act, we took charge of the situation and started the Woodstock Cleanup Group. Our monthly street clean-ups have become a great meeting place for neighbours and galvanising local businesses into action. We fill 40+ bags every month with rubbish, which we split into recyclables and landfill.

Amy Foundation

We always love supporting charities that are for a good cause and trying to make a difference. Another one of those is the Amy Foundation. This foundation provides a safe environment in challenged and vulnerable communities. They reach over 500 youngsters (aged 5-35) through their after-school and weekend outreach programmes as well as their Youth Skills Development Programmes. It is a great foundation that helps young people stay away from the street and help them build up a career for themselves.
