Blessed with a diverse landscape that combine mopane woodland, floodplains, rivers, fairy-tale like lagoons and acacia forests, animal life in the Moremi Game Reserve thrives at almost inordinately high levels. Almost nowhere else can you see so many species coexist side by side. Leopards who prefer forests, cheetah who prefer open plains, lions who prefer tall grasses, hippos who need water, water antelopes, buffalos, rhino, hyena… The variety of species present and the high game density will take your breath away . This reserve was created in 1963 and is the oldest in Botswana.
Interested in birdlife? You might like to know there are over 560 recorded bird species in the relatively small Moremi Game Reserve, as they thrive in Botswana’s undisturbed natural vegetation. Moremi's finest area is probably Chief's Island, where you'll find several of Botswana's top safari camps. It was once Chief Moremi’s personal royal hunting reserve, due to its high game concentration, and to this day it is a wonderful hotspot for animal viewings.

Nowadays it offers one of the most awe-inspiring safari experiences in the world. Although part of the Moremi Game Reserve, Chief's Island is private. There is no access except via charter plane, which means no roads and no self-drivers. Chances are you will not meet a single soul except for the couple of people who share your game drive vehicle. This is as intimate and back-to-nature as you can get.

Best time to go to Moremi Game Reserv

Winter (June to September):  Moremi’s climate is identical to that of the Okavango Delta, as the two regions are adjacent. Therefore, winter is also the best time to visit Moremi Game Reserve. The days are dry and sunny, water levels are at their highest and this is the best time to explore all of Moremi’s little hidden waterways by boat or mokoro, the traditional dugout canoe. Wildlife is abundant, well-watered, well-fed and healthy.

Spring (September – November) and Autumn ( April – May): Our favourite time to visit Moremi Game Reserve is the in-between seasons of spring and autumn, as they strike a good compromise between good weather and good prices. Many lodges offer reduced mid-season prices for April, May or October, November which can save you up to 40% compared to winter prices. While we will have to choose your lodge more carefully to make sure you can experience your water-based activities fully, it is fully possible to plan a perfectly balanced trip which will introduce you to all facets of a Botswana safari experience.  If you are combining your trip with Victoria Falls, you may wish to travel in April or May, as that is when the Falls flow at its strongest.

Summer (December to March): Summer is not the best time to go to the Moremi Game Reserve. Summer is when the majority of rain fall occurs, and the vegetation bounces back to life with lush green trees and high grass as far as the eye can see. While most animals are sedentary and are still present, they will seek shade and will be much harder to spot in the thick summer foliage.

Also, storms and lower water levels can limit activities, and you might not be able to experience boating or mokoro, which is one of the main reasons to visit Botswana for many. However, the silver lining are the much cheaper rates offered during green season. If you chose this season, we recommend you don’t miss out on visiting Makgadikgadi Pans as well, as they experience their best season in summer.
