Dazzling night skies

Francois Lebrun • Jul 14, 2023

😍 Dazzling night skies is one of South Africa’s secret little pleasures our guests are treated to. This is especially true when visiting remote areas where the sky is free of light pollution to distract you from what’s twinkling in the sky.✨🌜

Here are our 4 favourite stargazing spots in South Africa:

1. Sutherland: This remote location in the desolate Karoo tops the list as South Africa’s premier stargazing destination. The tiny town is home to the largest telescope in the southern hemisphere where a flat landscape allows unobstructed views of a surreal and magical night sky.⭐🌌

2. Kruger National Park: Not just famous for its safaris, the Kruger region is also ideal for observing the hidden jewels of the night sky with no light pollution or anything else besides the occasional sound of wildlife to distract you. The areas located further north on the reserve is favoured by many stargazers.🌿🦁

3. Cederberg: Although celestial constellations are constantly moving, the one that can be admired year-round in the Southern Hemisphere is the Southern Cross. Visit the Cederberg Observatory where star talks happen every second or third night to learn more about our night sky.

4. The Little Karoo: Along the iconic Route 62 you will find Starry Starry Night. Home to JD and François, this beautiful eco mountain reserve is the perfect accommodation spot for stargazing - even from the comfort of your antique brass bed, which boasts a stargazing window overhead. 🤩🌃
